The most important item first. The Marshall family would like to thank Hoffman Auctions for their efficient and respectful handling of our parent’s estate, and we offer our highest recommendation for their auction services.
Following the passing of our mother, the family began the process to resolve the house and home contents situation. We knew that this would be quite the undertaking as our parents lived in the house for over fifty years and accumulated items from across the globe. Every room in the house, finished and unfinished sides of the basement, garage, and enclosed patio were full of possessions. Decent progress was made for the first four months. Many items were donated, some given to other family members and friends, and a 26-foot box truck full of old, unusable items were hauled away. However, this was just a minor dent in the list of possessions.
Unfortunately, a couple of months later, we suspended these activities as we began to deal with other health issues in the family, and the unfortunate passing of one of our mothers-in-law. We resolved our mother-in-law’s estate, but the other family health issues became more serious. Activities on the resolution of the initial estate became sporadic at best.
Now, two and a half years into the situation, the remaining work to resolve the initial estate carried a lot of anxiety, and a decision was made to look for potential alternatives.
Our initial meeting with Michael was very positive and informative. Michael reviewed the home’s contents and was thorough in explaining his analysis and our possible options. He was very patient in listening to our questions and understanding the family dynamics. After discussing the meeting with the family, a follow-up up meeting was held to confirm and finalize the plan. Again, Michael’s patience, industry experience, and knowledge were highlighted and left us with a good feeling about the auction process.
Michael and his team – Derrick and Mark, began the process to catalog the home’s contents and setup the lots for the auction. Other items that would not be included in the auction were set aside for donation or placed in a dumpster to be hauled away.
Michael explained that the online auction activities would start slowly and increase as the end date approached. This was the case. The auction was successful; purchaser pickup was smooth and efficient and only a few items remained in the house.
In addition to Michael’s patience and responsiveness throughout the process, the family also appreciated the respectful way Michael, Derrick, and Mark handled our parent’s possessions. Even though it was a tremendous amount of work, the Hoffman team was always friendly and respectful of the work that they were doing. All of this was accomplished in three weeks, not years as it would have taken if we continued to do the work ourselves.

I was introduced to Michael Hoffman in 2014 through the Franklin County Probate Court's list of approved appraisers. Michael was hired to appraise the tangible personal property of a very large estate. The assets consisted of original pieces of art, coins, jewelry, vintage bottles of wine, and other unique items, along with all the normal household goods. There were over 600 pieces. Each item was photographed, cataloged, and described. His report was several hundred pages. Michael was able to appraise and report within a two-and-a-half-week period, which is an amazing turnaround time. As a result, his valuations were approved by the Internal Revenue Service as part of the decedent's federal estate tax return. After this experience, Michael Hoffman is the only appraiser and auctioneer I work with.
Michael has handled over five real estate transactions for me. Michael goes out of his way to increase the sale price of the property at auction. He begins with an inspection of the property. He will have the property cleaned and the yards mowed, if necessary. He holds open houses. He advertises the auction not only in the newspaper, as required by statute, but also online and through personal contacts. After the public auction, he stays involved in the process until the final closing of the real estate. In three out of the five real estate auctions, Michael was able to sell the real estate for bids higher than the mortgage companies in court-ordered land sale proceedings. This is impressive in the probate land sale, as it is common for the mortgage company to "buy" the real estate back from the probate estate.
I highly recommend Michael Hoffman. I rely on his abilities to obtain the best and highest prices at his auctions. I'm confident in his professionalism and ability to work with our clients during very difficult times in their lives. I have repeatedly seen him go out of his way to market the properties and present the real estate in the best possible way.
